EXERCISE

The year is 2050. You are the head of a new division under the United Nations, created to explore new planets for settlements. This is called the Interplanetary Strike for Elevating Alternative Regions, popularly INTERSTELLAR, named after a movie made on this topic about forty years ago.

INTERSTELLAR has been told about two likely planets in nearby solar systems, located far off but still within a five-year travel period from our planet. Considering how large the universe is, this is just a stone’s throw away! Two probes have already been sent to these planets, and the reports are promising. The gravity and heat are suitable for human habitation, and the people of Planet Earth are excited about the possibilities.

However, as head of INTERSTELLAR, you know that there will be significant problems in the coming days. Humans are very sensitive to the environment and need a certain suitable mix of gases and water to survive. Moreover, the crust of the planet needs to bear soil in order for plants to grow, and hence produce necessary food. Thankfully, you have the Indian Institute of Nanotechnology (IIN) in New Delhi for help. They have promised to design nanorobots that can be sent to any planet in order to conduct the necessary chemical reactions to produce any necessary elements and compounds such as oxygen and water. However, you need to programme them for a particular reaction.

1. The first planet, called Xeter, poses a serious challenge—scarcity of water. Barely 1 per cent of its surface is water, and your INTERSTELLAR team tells you that you need it to have at least 50 per cent water for humans to survive on it. Probes have, however, shown one interesting finding. The planet is filled with sodium acetate, a white powder spread all over its surface. You are wondering if this can be converted into water. IIN’s nanorobots are capable of carrying chemical packets to start any reaction. INTERSTELLAR needs you to determine what gas they should carry to make water from the available sodium acetate powder. Can you find out and give the instructions?

2. The second planet is called Krypto, and it contains water in abundance but in solid form, i.e. ice. It also lacks a critical component of human life—oxygen. Initially INTERSTELLAR thought it would electrolyse the water into oxygen, but that proved to be a costly process in terms of energy and so the plan was abandoned. Then the latest probe highlighted something that excited everyone. The planet is filled with sodium percarbonate. INTERSTELLAR wants you to determine how it can use this sodium percarbonate to generate oxygen. What process should the IIN nanorobots carry out on planet Krypto?
